Alright, folks, let’s dive into my journey of figuring out this whole “working for the NBA” thing. It wasn’t exactly straightforward, but hey, that’s part of the fun, right?
First Steps: Getting My Head in the Game
Initially, I spent a lot of time just browsing. I mean, a lot. I started by simply exploring the NBA’s official website. I dug around, clicked on everything, and got a sense of the organization’s departments and what they did. I also got a better sense of scope of the NBA.
Narrowing it Down: Finding My Niche
Next, I tried to figure out, if i worked here, what position would i want? Basketball Operations? Marketing? Finance? . I knew I wasn’t going to be a player or a coach, so I started thinking about my real-world skills. I’m pretty good with organization, and I love diving deep into research, so I started focusing on roles that might use those skills.

Job Boards and Applications: Time to Get Serious
Once I had a few target areas, I hit the job boards. I spent some time checking out the NBA career portal. It seemed pretty competitive, so I figured I needed to up my game.
- Updated my resume: I made sure my resume was super clear, focusing on the skills that matched the jobs I was seeing. No fluff, just the good stuff.
- Wrote some cover letters: I didn’t just send the same thing to everyone. I tried to tailor each cover letter to the specific job, showing I actually read the description and understood what they needed.
- Network as much as possible: I even reached out to a few people on a professional networking platform who worked at the NBA (or had worked there before) just to ask about their experiences. It was a little nerve-wracking, but most people were pretty cool about it.
The Waiting Game (and More Applications)
After sending out a bunch of applications, it was…well, a lot of waiting. I kept checking my email like a hawk, hoping for an interview request. I also kept applying for new positions that popped up, trying to stay proactive.
The Outcome (So Far)
Okay, I have to admit, this is still very much a work in progress. I’m still in the thick of it! I’ve had a couple of informational interviews, which were super helpful for getting a better sense of the company culture and what different teams do. Still waiting to hear back about a few roles, but my fingers are crossed. My resume is out there, and my applications as well.
This whole process has been a learning experience. It’s shown me that landing a dream job takes persistence, a bit of strategy, and a whole lot of patience. Will I get there? I’m hoping so! I’ll keep you all updated on how it goes. Wish me luck!
