So, I was super curious about how F1 drivers sit in those cars. I mean, they’re going at insane speeds, so they’ve gotta be comfy, right? I did some digging and decided to try to experience it myself, as much as I could, at least.
First, I wanted to get a seat that was kind of like what the drivers use. They have these special seats molded just for them, using some fancy foam stuff. Since I couldn’t get one of those custom-made, I grabbed a gaming chair I have. It’s got decent support and it reclines pretty far back, which seemed important.
Next, I learned that these guys are basically lying down in the car. It’s not like sitting in your regular car at all. So, I reclined my chair as far as it would go. It felt weird at first, like I was about to take a nap or something. I also grabbed a pillow and placed it behind my head. I understand they have special headrests to keep their helmets secure.

Then there’s the seat belt situation. From what I read, they use a six-point harness, which is way more intense than my chair’s setup. But I wanted to get the feeling of being strapped in tight, so I used a regular car seat belt I had lying around and tightened it as much as I could. It wasn’t the same, but it gave me a better sense of how secure they must feel.
Getting into position
- Reclined the gaming chair all the way back.
- Placed a pillow behind my head for simulating a headrest.
- Used a regular car seat belt and tightened it for a sense of security.
Once I was all set up, I sat there for a while, trying to imagine what it would be like to drive at 200 mph in that position. It’s definitely not your average sitting experience! It made me appreciate how much core strength and focus those drivers must have to handle those G-forces while practically lying down.
My little experiment wasn’t exactly like being in an F1 car, but it gave me a new perspective on what those drivers go through. It’s a whole different world of sitting! I understand that their seats are designed based on their height, weight and driving style. It makes sense. It was a fun little project, and I definitely have a lot more respect for F1 drivers now.
