Alright, so you wanna know how many NBA teams there were back in 1969, huh? Well, lemme tell ya, it wasn’t like today, with all these fancy teams and players running around. Back then, things were simpler, you know?
In 1969, there were 14 NBA teams. Yep, just fourteen. Not a whole lot compared to what we got now. They were just starting to grow the league, adding a few new teams here and there. It was kinda like watching a small plant grow into a big ol’ tree, ya know?

- Things were different then. Players weren’t making millions, and the games weren’t always on TV. You had to listen on the radio sometimes, or maybe even wait for the newspaper to come out the next day to see who won!
- And the players, oh boy, they were tough. No fancy stuff, just good ol’ fashioned basketball. They played hard, they hustled, and they didn’t complain much. They were real workhorses, not like some of these prima donnas you see today.
Now, in 1969, they added a couple of new teams. The Phoenix Suns and the Milwaukee Bucks, those were the newbies. Imagine that, starting a whole new team! Must’ve been a lot of work, getting everything set up, finding players, and all that jazz. And the Hawks, they moved from St. Louis to Atlanta that year too. Guess they were lookin’ for a change of scenery, huh?
The season, it was the 24th NBA season, and the New York Knicks, they won the whole shebang. Beat out everyone else and took home the championship. Must’ve been a real exciting time for them New York folks. And the All-Star Game, that was in Baltimore, and the East beat the West. Folks probably had a good time watching that, cheering on their favorite players.
Before 1969, in 1967 and 1968 season, they added the Seattle SuperSonics and the San Diego Rockets too. And that San Diego team, they later became the Houston Rockets. So, you see, things were always changing, just like they do now. Teams movin’, new teams poppin’ up, it’s all part of the game. In the 1967-68 season the league changed to a 12-team league and played the first 82-game schedule. In 1965, only nine teams in the league. It growed and growed. It’s like my garden, every year I add some new plants and sometimes I gotta move ‘em around if they ain’t doin’ so good.
So, to recap, 14 teams in 1969. Not too many, not too few, just right for that time. They played hard, they played tough, and they gave the fans something to cheer about. It wasn’t fancy, but it was real basketball, the kind I like to watch. And that’s all there is to it, plain and simple. Don’t need no fancy stats or nothin’, just good ol’ fashioned numbers. Fourteen teams, that’s the answer you were lookin’ for.
And the league just kept on growin’ after that. More teams, more players, more games. It’s a whole different world now, but it’s good to remember where it all started. Those 14 teams back in ’69, they laid the foundation for everything we got today. So, next time you’re watchin’ a game, think about those fellas, playin’ their hearts out in those old gyms. They were the real deal, ya know?
And you know what? Now a days, the league has grown to 30 teams! Can you believe it? That Charlotte team, they had some trouble, moving and changing names, but they figured it out in the end. It’s amazing how much things can change in just a few years. From 14 teams in 1969 to 30 now, that’s a whole lotta basketball! And the players, they’re taller, faster, and stronger than ever before. But still, there’s something special about those old days, when the game was a little bit simpler, a little bit tougher, and a whole lot of fun.
