So, I’ve always been a huge F1 fan, right? The speed, the tech, the roar of those engines…it’s just insane. And like any other fan, I’ve had this crazy dream: Can I actually buy an F1 car?
I started digging around, just to see what’s what. Turns out, it’s not as simple as going to a car dealership and picking one out. These things are rare beasts. But guess what? You can actually buy them. Yeah, you heard that right. Retired F1 cars, the ones that have actually raced, they do come up for sale sometimes.
How did I find this out?
Well, I spent hours on the internet. I checked out some auction houses like RM Sotheby’s and Bonhams. It turns out they sometimes sell these cars.

- Auctions: They have these big fancy auctions where people bid on all sorts of collectible stuff, including F1 cars.
- Specialized sellers: There are also businesses that specialize in selling high-end race cars.
- Private sales: I also learned that sometimes people sell these cars privately. You need to know the right people and be part of that world.
Now, here’s the kicker: these cars are not cheap. We’re talking millions of dollars. It’s nuts! I read that a typical new F1 car can cost up to $15.5 million, and a new engine alone can be around $10.5 million. So, yeah, the engine is the most expensive part. Makes sense, I guess.
Then there’s the whole issue of, can you even drive it on the road? I mean, that would be the ultimate dream, right? But F1 cars are built for the track, not for your daily commute. However I found that it is possible to change an F1 car to make it street legal! There was this one example I found, a Lola T97/30, that someone actually modified to drive on the road. They added headlights, turn signals, and even a horn.
So, long story short, buying an F1 car is totally possible, but it’s a whole different ball game. You need deep pockets, connections, and a whole lot of patience. And even if you get your hands on one, don’t expect to use it for grocery shopping. It’s still cool to know that it’s possible, though. It’s like a little piece of that F1 dream can actually come true.
