Hey everyone, today I want to talk about something that’s been on my mind lately – can F1 students apply for the diversity visa? I recently went through this whole process and I wanna share my experience.
So, I started digging around because I’m an F1 student here in the US, and you know, the idea of a green card is pretty tempting. First, I needed to figure out what this “diversity visa” thing actually is. Turns out, it’s also called the green card lottery, and it’s a way for people from countries with low immigration rates to the US to get a chance at a green card.
What I Found Out
- They make like 50,000 of these visas available every year.
- It’s basically a random lottery, so your chances are as good as anyone else’s.
- Good news: applying for the lottery doesn’t mess with your current F1 status or any future visa stuff.
Now, the big question – could I, as an F1 student, even apply? I scoured the internet, and guess what? International students, including F1 visa holders like me, can totally enter the diversity visa lottery! But, not everyone’s eligible. People from certain countries like Canada, Mexico, India, and a few others can’t apply.

The next step was figuring out how to apply for the F1 visa in the first place, just in case any of you are at that stage. You’ll need a valid passport, some forms, a photo, and proof that you can financially support yourself.
But honestly, the most important part is getting accepted into a US school that’s recognized by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program.
My Application Journey
I decided to go for it. I mean, why not, right? The application process for the lottery itself was surprisingly straightforward. I just filled out the online form, double-checked everything, and hit submit.
Now, I’m just playing the waiting game. It’s all up to chance now, but I’m feeling pretty good about it. I’ll definitely update you guys if I get selected. Fingers crossed!
Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience and what I learned. It’s a bit of a long shot, but hey, you never know. If you’re an F1 student and you’re thinking about a more permanent future in the US, the diversity visa lottery might be worth a shot!
