Trading Card Thickness Guide

Now listen here, if ya ever got yerself a bunch of them trading cards, ya know, them shiny ones with all them players and whatnot, ya might be wonderin’ how thick them cards are, right? Well, lemme tell ya, figuring out the thickness of yer cards ain’t too hard, but ya gotta do it proper. Ain’t nobody wants their cards to get all bent and ruined, especially them expensive ones! So, here’s a little guide I got for ya, and I reckon it’ll help ya out just fine.

First off, when we talk about the thickness of them cards, we’re talkin’ about the “point” measurement, or “pt” as the fancy folks call it. Now, don’t let that scare ya none, cause it’s simple. 1 pt is just 1/1000 of an inch. So, if yer card’s 100 pt thick, that’s about 1/10 of an inch, simple as that. Now, most regular trading cards, like the ones you get with baseball players or them magic cards, they tend to be around 35 pt thick. That’s the standard thickness, so don’t go thinkin’ all cards are the same—different cards can be thicker or thinner depending on what they are.

Trading Card Thickness Explained: A Step-by-Step Guide for Collectors

Now, if ya got a whole collection of cards, you’re gonna need to know what kind of holder to use for ‘em. Ya don’t want them things all bent up and scratched, so get yourself a good toploader or some magnetic holders. For most regular cards, like them baseball ones, ya’ll need a toploader that fits a 35 pt card. Them holders are real sturdy, and they’ll keep yer cards nice and safe. But if ya got some thicker cards, like them fancy patch cards or relic cards, you might need to go up to 75 pt or even 100 pt holders, depending on how thick they are.

How to Measure Your Cards’ Thickness

If you got one of them thickness gauges, it’s pretty easy. First, make sure the gauge is set to zero. You don’t want no mistakes in measurement, right? Then, you just place yer card right between the jaws of the gauge, and it’ll tell ya exactly how thick the card is. If ya ain’t got one of them fancy gadgets, you can always eyeball it with a ruler, but that’s a bit trickier, and you might not get it just right.

Here’s a little breakdown to help ya understand what kind of holder you’ll need for different thicknesses:

  • 35 pt cards: These are your regular trading cards, like the ones from baseball, football, or basketball. You’ll need a 35 pt toploader to keep ‘em safe.
  • 75 pt cards: These are thicker cards, like them patch cards, where you got a little piece of fabric or something in there. You’ll need a 75 pt toploader for these.
  • 100 pt cards: Now, if ya got one of them real thick cards, like a relic or a jersey card, you’ll be needing a 100 pt holder. They’re the real chunky ones!

Why Does Card Thickness Matter?

Card Thickness and Protection

Trading Card Thickness Explained: A Step-by-Step Guide for Collectors

When it comes to protectin’ yer cards, it’s all about finding the right balance. Too thick a holder, and it might be harder to store yer cards, especially if ya got a lot of ‘em. Too thin a holder, and yer card might not be safe enough. So, always make sure yer cards are snug and protected, but not too tight, or it could cause problems. Magnetic holders are real good for some cards, cause they’re nice and secure, but they can be a little pricey. It all depends on what kind of cards you got and how much you’re willin’ to spend.

In the end, it don’t take much to keep yer trading cards in good condition. A little knowledge about their thickness and the right tools can go a long way. Just make sure you measure ‘em right, get the proper holders, and keep them safe, and your cards will last a lot longer. Ain’t nobody wants to ruin a perfectly good card just ‘cause they didn’t know what they were doin’, right?
