Alright, so, let’s gab a bit about this here “cardinal rookie of the year” thing. Now, I ain’t no fancy baseball expert, ya hear? Just a regular old lady who likes watchin’ the games sometimes. But from what I gather, this award is a pretty big deal for them young fellas just startin’ out.
Seems like this “rookie” means it’s their first year playin’ in the big leagues. And “cardinal,” well, that’s gotta be the St. Louis team, right? Them red birds. So, we’re talkin’ ’bout the best new player on the Cardinals. That’s somethin’ special, I tell ya.
I heard tell that back in the day, only one fella from the Cardinals ever won this here award, way back in 1954. Can you believe that? Just one! Then, some years later, a bunch more of ’em started winnin’ it. Like that Ozzie Smith fella, he was real good at catchin’ the ball, they say. And Willie McGee, he could hit that ball real far. And that Todd Worrell, he was a pitcher, I think, threw the ball real fast.

But this year, well, it’s a whole different story. This year, they was talkin’ ’bout this Masyn Winn fella. He’s a young’un, plays that shortstop position. That’s the one where they stand in the middle of the field, right? He’s supposed to be pretty good, real fast on his feet. But you know what? He didn’t even get a single vote for rookie of the year! Can you imagine that? All that fuss, and not a single vote.
Now, they got all these other youngsters playin’ for other teams, and some of ’em are real somethin’. I heard about one fella, a pitcher, name of Skenes. He plays for the Pirates, I think. Folks are sayin’ he’s the best new pitcher in the whole league. And he just got drafted last year! That’s like gettin’ a job right outta school, and then bein’ the best at it right away. Must be a real talented boy.
- They say this Skenes fella throws the ball real hard, and hardly anyone can hit it.
- And then there’s this other fella, Paris Johnson, plays tackle, not even baseball, but football.
- He plays for the Cardinals football team. He was the first pick and started playing right away. They say he’s the rookie of the year.
So, it’s tough bein’ a rookie, I guess. You gotta compete with all these other young fellas, tryin’ to prove you’re the best. And sometimes, even if you’re good, like that Masyn Winn, you still don’t win the award. But that don’t mean nothin’, I say. Just gotta keep playin’ your best, keep tryin’ to get better. That’s all you can do.
Heck, I remember this fella, Bake McBride, back in ’74. He hit the ball all over the place, stole a bunch of bases too. He didn’t win no rookie of the year, but he was still a darn good player. So, these awards, they’re nice and all, but they ain’t everything. It’s how you play the game, that’s what matters.
So, that’s my two cents on this here “cardinal rookie of the year.” It’s a tough award to win, lots of good young players out there. But whether you win it or not, just keep playin’ hard and doin’ your best. That’s the important thing, ain’t it?
And who knows, maybe next year, that Masyn Winn fella will come back stronger and win the whole darn thing. I’ll be rootin’ for him, that’s for sure. He seems like a nice young man.
