Okay, so I saw this thing online about Will Ferrell playing in a bunch of baseball games for charity, and I thought, “That sounds crazy enough to try.” I mean, I’m no pro, but I can swing a bat, right? So, I decided to have my own Will Ferrell baseball dad day.
Getting Started
First things first, I needed a game. I’m not in any leagues, so I rounded up some buddies. We’re all pretty average, weekend-warrior types. We picked a local park – you know, the kind with a slightly overgrown field and a questionable backstop. Perfect!
Gearing Up (Sort Of)
I didn’t go full Ferrell – no multiple uniforms or anything. But I did grab my old glove from the garage. It was a little dusty, and I think a family of spiders had made a home in it, but hey, it added character. I also wore my son’s Little League cap. It was a bit snug, but it worked.
The “Game”
Let’s just say, “game” is a loose term. We had maybe 8 guys total, so the teams were… uneven. My friend, Mark, tried to pitch like a pro, but mostly he just threw the ball really, really hard. Sometimes it went over the plate, sometimes it went into the next field over. We spent more time chasing balls than hitting them.
- First Inning: I struck out. Spectacularly. I think I swung at a pitch that bounced twice.
- Second Inning: I actually hit the ball! It was a weak grounder, but I made it to first! Then I got tagged out trying to steal second. Ambition, people, ambition.
- Third Inning: I played outfield. Mostly, I just stood there and watched birds. A ball did come near me once, but I… uh… missed it. By a lot.
The Aftermath
We didn’t keep score. We probably should have, but honestly, it wouldn’t have been pretty. We ended the day with more laughs than runs, which is kind of the point, right? My legs were surprisingly sore, my glove smelled weird, and I had a grass stain on my jeans, so, all in all, a perfect tribute to the Will Ferrell baseball experience. I think I fulfilled that baseball dad vibe I wanted to try.
