Want to Play College Football? Heres How to Get Recruited

Okay, so you wanna get recruited for college football? Let me tell you, it’s a wild ride. I went through it myself, and I’m gonna spill all the beans – no fancy jargon, just straight talk from someone who’s been there.

Step 1: Be Good at Football (Duh!)

This sounds obvious, but seriously, you gotta shine on the field. I spent countless hours practicing, even when I didn’t feel like it. Drills, drills, drills. And not just going through the motions – I pushed myself to get better every single time. I watched film of my games, saw where I messed up, and worked like crazy to fix it.

  • Work your butt off. No substitute for hard work, period.
  • Be coachable. Listen to your coaches, take their feedback, and actually use it.
  • Be a team player. Football is a team sport, and colleges want guys who can work with others.

Step 2: Get Your Grades Right

Coaches want players, yes, but colleges want students. I learned this the hard way. My grades slipped sophomore year, and it almost cost me. I had to buckle down, get extra help, and show those colleges I could handle the academics too.

  • Hit the books. Good grades open doors, bad grades slam them shut.
  • Take the SAT/ACT seriously. Prep for them, aim for a good score. It matters.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Tutors, teachers, study groups – use them!

Step 3: Get Yourself Out There

You can’t just sit around and wait for colleges to find you. You gotta make some noise. For me, this meant going to camps and combines. It was nerve-wracking, putting myself out there like that, but it was essential. I got to showcase my skills in front of different coaches and get my name on their radar.

  • Make a highlight reel. Show off your best plays. Make it exciting!
  • Go to camps and combines. Get in front of coaches, show them what you’ve got.
  • Reach out to coaches. Don’t be shy! Send emails, introduce yourself.

Step 4. Build The Highlight

I took clips from every game I could get my hands on. I picked out the plays that really showed what I could do – big hits, long runs, whatever made me look good. Then, I asked one friend to help me, and put it all together into a short, punchy video. We have spent 3 days to get things done. Nothing fancy, just the good stuff.

Step 5: The Waiting Game (and Staying Ready)

This part is tough. You send out your stuff, you wait, you hope. It’s a lot of uncertainty. I kept training, kept working on my grades, and stayed ready for any opportunity. I talked to coaches who showed interest, answered their questions, and tried to make a good impression.

  • Be patient. It takes time. Don’t get discouraged.
  • Stay in shape. Be ready to jump at any opportunity.
  • Keep your grades up. Don’t let things slide.

Step 6: Making the Decision

Eventually, I started getting offers. It was exciting, but also overwhelming. I visited different schools, talked to coaches and players, and tried to find the best fit for me – not just the biggest name, but the place where I felt I could thrive as a player and a student. Finally, after a lot of thinking with my parents, I picked the school that my gut told me it’s the right one.

It’s a long, tough process, but if you really want it, it’s worth it. Just remember to work hard, stay focused, and put yourself out there. Good luck!
