Okay, so I’ve been getting into boxing lately, and let me tell you, it’s a whole different world. I thought, “Hey, I’m in decent shape, I can throw a punch, how hard can it be?” Boy, was I wrong. It’s not just about hitting hard; there are so many different fighting styles. So, I started experimenting, trying to figure out what works for me.
My Journey Through Boxing Styles
First, I watched a ton of videos online. You know, those highlight reels of the pros? I tried to mimic them, moving my feet, bobbing and weaving. I even got a heavy bag for the garage.
- The Swarmer: I Started by acting like a “swarmer.” Getting up close, throwing a flurry of punches, trying to overwhelm my imaginary opponent (aka the heavy bag). I ran around the bag fast and tried to punch non-stop. It was exhausting! I was gasping for air after like, a minute. And my arms felt like lead. Definitely not sustainable for a whole fight.
- The Out-Boxer: Next, I tried to be an “out-boxer.” Staying at a distance, using my jab, trying to keep the bag at bay. This felt a little better, more controlled. But I realized I wasn’t really generating any power. My punches felt weak, like I was just tapping the bag. I practiced moving around a lot, popping the bag with jabs, but it didn’t feel… impactful.
- The Slugger: Then, I went full “slugger.” Just trying to land haymakers, those big, looping punches. I wound up and let it rip. It felt good to connect, to really feel the impact. But I was also wide open, leaving myself vulnerable. I could practically hear my coach yelling at me to keep my guard up!
- The Boxer-Puncher:I also tried the “boxer-puncher.” It requires good all-around skills.I Found it too hard to be good at both defense and offence.
Finding My (Current) Style
After all that experimenting, I realized I’m probably somewhere in between. I like to be close, but I can’t keep that super intense swarmer pace. I need to be more strategic, pick my moments to go in, and then get out before I get gassed or countered.I still have long way to go,but it’s much fun,I think.

Right now, I’m focusing on improving my footwork, getting better at moving in and out of range. I’m working on my jab, making it snappier and more effective. And I’m definitely trying to keep my guard up! It’s a process, and I’m learning something new every time I step into the garage (which is now my makeshift gym). It’s tough, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.
