Okay, folks, let’s dive into something I tackled today – figuring out how long baseball games are lasting in 2024. I’ve been meaning to catch a few more games this season, but, you know, life gets in the way. I needed a better handle on the time commitment.
So, I started with a simple question: How much time should I actually block out for a game?
My Little Experiment
First, I grabbed my notepad and opened up my browser. My go-to move is usually just Googling stuff, so that’s what I did.

I typed in “how long do baseball games last 2024,” and, well, a bunch of articles popped up.
I skimmed through a few of the top results. Most of them talked about rule changes and pace-of-play initiatives. Seem MLB want to reduce the games’ time.
Then I decided to get my hands dirty. I pulled up the schedules for a few teams I follow and started looking at their recent game times. I figured seeing real data would give me a clearer picture.
- I noticed most games were hovering around the 2 hour and 40-minute mark. Some were quicker, some were longer, obviously.
- There were a few outliers, of course – extra-inning games, or games with a ton of pitching changes. Those pushed the time up considerably.
- I also checked a few minor league games, just out of curiosity. Those seemed to be a bit shorter, closer to 2 hours and 30 minutes on average.
My conclusion
After all this digging, what did I learn? It’s pretty simple, really.
If I’m planning to go to a Major League Baseball game in 2024, I’m going to block off about 3 hours. That should cover most games, giving me a little wiggle room for extra innings or a slower-paced game. If it’s a minor league game, maybe I can get away with 2 and half hour.
And that’s all, I hope that information will be useful for you guys!
