Okay, so I’ve been wanting to try my hand at drawing the NBA logo for a while now. It’s such an iconic image, you know? Red, white, and blue, that silhouette of a player dribbling. It’s just so cool! I finally got around to doing it, and I figured I’d share my process here.
First off, I grabbed my sketchbook and a pencil. I’m no artist, but I do enjoy doodling. I also pulled up a picture of the NBA logo on my phone to use as a reference. I mean, I know what it looks like generally, but I wanted to get the details right, especially the shape of the figure.
Getting Started
- Find a reference: I just googled “NBA logo” and used one of the first images that popped up. Easy peasy.
- Gather supplies: Sketchbook, pencil, eraser. Nothing fancy.
Then I started to draw. I lightly sketched the rectangle shape first, just to get the proportions right. After that, I focused on the silhouette. This was the trickiest part, to be honest. It’s not just a stick figure, it’s a specific pose, mid-dribble. I erased a lot, trust me. I drew in my notebook, I practiced it on a whiteboard. I tried to draw the same thing over and over again. I kept sketching and erasing, trying to get the curves and angles of the body just right. Finally, I found that I could do it with my eyes closed or with my off-hand.

The Silhouette Struggle
Drawing the figure was a real challenge. I redrew it like a million times. I focused on getting the legs, the arms, and the ball in the right position. I must have spent a good hour just on this part. It’s tougher than it looks! I even tried drawing with my eyes closed, but that didn’t turn out so great.
After I was finally happy with the silhouette, I started filling in the colors. I used colored pencils for this. Red on one side, blue on the other, and left the figure white. It was actually pretty relaxing, like coloring in a coloring book. I guess this logo was designed in 1969 by a guy named Alan Siegel, according to the internet.
Coloring It In
- Red and Blue: I used colored pencils. Markers would probably work too, but I didn’t have any on hand.
- White: This was the easy part. I just left it blank!
In the end, I think it turned out pretty good! It’s definitely recognizable as the NBA logo. It’s not perfect, but I’m happy with it. It was a fun little project, and it’s cool to see something I drew myself. Maybe I’ll try drawing other logos in the future. There are thirty NBA teams. Drawing each team’s logo might be an interesting challenge.
Anyway, that’s how I drew the NBA logo. Give it a try yourself! It’s a fun way to kill some time and maybe discover your inner artist. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Just keep practicing, and you’ll get there! Trust me, if I can do it, you can too.
