So, I’ve been playing baseball my whole life, right? And recently, some buddies got me into golf. I was curious, like, would swinging a golf club totally mess up my baseball swing? I mean, they look kinda similar, but also pretty different.
First off, I went to the driving range a few times. I grabbed my clubs, teed up the ball, and just started whacking away. Felt kinda weird, to be honest. In baseball, you’re waiting for that pitch, reacting, you know? But in golf, the ball’s just sitting there, staring at you. It’s a different kind of pressure.
Here’s what I noticed at the range:

- The stance is way different. In baseball, I’m more athletic, ready to move. In golf, I felt kinda stiff, trying to stay balanced.
- The swing path felt off. I kept wanting to swing up on the ball, like I’m trying to hit a homer. But in golf, you gotta come down on it, which felt super unnatural.
- My timing was all messed up. I’m used to reacting to a pitch. In golf, I had to create the whole motion myself. It was like my body didn’t know when to explode.
After the driving range, I played a few rounds with my buddies. It was… humbling. Let’s just say I spent a lot of time in the rough. But it did give me a better feel for the whole golf swing.
Then came baseball practice. I stepped into the batting cage, ready to crush some pitches. And guess what? It felt a little strange. Not terrible, but different.
Here’s how my baseball swing felt after playing golf:
- My hips felt looser. Maybe that’s a good thing? I seemed to rotate more easily.
- I felt a bit more conscious of my swing plane. Like, I was thinking about it more than usual.
- My hands felt a little “quieter.” In golf, you don’t really snap your wrists like in baseball. I noticed I wasn’t doing that as much.
Now, I’m no expert, but it didn’t feel like golf completely ruined my baseball swing. It just made me more aware of certain things, I did feel my baseball swing was influnced. I guess it’s like any cross-training. It can highlight some areas you need to work on, and maybe even help you in some unexpected ways. Or the other way around like my case.
I kept playing both sports, trying to keep the two swings separate in my head. It took some practice, but I started to get the hang of it.
The Verdict?
In the end, I don’t think golf messed up my baseball swing. It definitely made me think about my mechanics more, and I had to make some adjustments. But it wasn’t like I suddenly couldn’t hit a baseball anymore. I still did but felt uncomfortable. If anything, it probably helped me become a little more aware of my body and how it moves. Will I give up one of these sports? Hell no! But I learned I need to pay more attention to the differences between these two.
So, if you’re a baseball player thinking about taking up golf, I’d say go for it! Just be prepared to put in some work to keep your swings separate. And don’t expect to be Tiger Woods right away. Trust me on that one.
