Alright, let’s talk about them basketball fellas, the ones jumpin’ and shootin’ in the NBA. You know, the big league. Lots of them young’uns go to college first, learn some stuff, play some ball. But some, well, some just skip it altogether. Straight from high school to the pros, imagine that!
So, how many of these fellas skipped college? Well, it ain’t a huge number, not when you think about all the players ever been in the NBA. I heard tell it’s somethin’ like forty-something. Yeah, like forty-five or somethin’ like that, straight outta high school. Not a whole bunch, see? Just a handful compared to all them college boys.
Now, why would they do that, you ask? Well, some of ’em, they’re just that good, you know? Like that LeBron fella. Everybody and their grandma knew about him when he was still in high school. Games on TV and all. When you that good, why wait, right? Go get that money!

- Big names, big money
- Skippin’ college, straight to the pros
- Not a lot of ’em, but some real stars
Back in the old days, it wasn’t so common, but then some fellas started doin’ it. There was this one fella, Moses Malone, they say he was one of the first real big shots to skip college. And he did alright, won championships and all. Showed them college folks you didn’t need no degree to be a basketball star.
But then, the rules changed, see? They didn’t want just any kid jumpin’ into the NBA. So, they made a rule, you gotta be at least nineteen and a year outta high school. So, now, them young fellas, some of ’em go play overseas for a year, or just practice and wait. Still skippin’ college, but gotta wait a bit.
It ain’t always the best thing, you know? Some of them kids, they mighta been better off goin’ to college, learnin’ a thing or two. But for some, the super talented ones, it worked out just fine. They got rich, famous, and all that. It’s a gamble, I tell ya, a real gamble. Some win big, some, well, they kinda disappear.
It’s like this, you got a boy, real good at basketball, everybody sayin’ he’s the next big thing. He could go to college, get an education, maybe play in the NBA later. Or he can jump right in, risk it all. Tough choice, ain’t it? Gotta be real sure of yourself, real confident. And gotta have folks around you, givin’ you good advice, not just lookin’ to make a quick buck off ya.
And think about this, there’s thousands of fellas playin’ in the NBA, but only a few dozen skipped college. It’s a rare thing, like findin’ a four-leaf clover. And just like them clovers, some bring you good luck, some don’t. You just never know.
It ain’t all about the money, though. Some of these boys, they just love basketball, wanna play at the highest level, as soon as possible. They figure they can learn just as much playin’ against the best in the world as they can sittin’ in a classroom. Maybe they’re right, maybe they’re wrong. Everybody’s different.
And that Mikal Bridges fella, I heard tell he never missed a game. That’s somethin’ ain’t it? Shows you dedication, hard work. Don’t matter if you went to college or not, you gotta put in the effort. That’s the real secret, I reckon. Work hard, stay focused, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll make it big.
So, yeah, forty-something players skipped college. Not a whole lot, but enough to make ya think. It’s a big decision, a life-changin’ decision. And it ain’t for everyone, that’s for sure. But for a few lucky fellas, it was the right path, the path to NBA stardom.
