Okay, so I’ve been getting into martial arts lately, and it’s been a bit of a whirlwind trying to figure out all the different styles. I started with kickboxing, thinking it was just, you know, kicking and boxing. Then I saw some MMA fights and was like, “Wait, what’s the difference?” So, I hit the gym and started experimenting, and here’s the lowdown from my newbie perspective.
Kickboxing: Stand-Up Striking
First, I signed up for a kickboxing class. My thinking? Learn to punch and kick properly. The class was all about staying on your feet. We did tons of drills focusing on jabs, crosses, hooks, and uppercuts – the boxing part. Then, the kicking: front kicks, side kicks, roundhouse kicks… my legs were burning! The instructor kept emphasizing combinations, like jab-cross-roundhouse. We also worked on footwork, moving around, and staying light on our feet.
- Lots of punching combinations.
- Different types of kicks, focused on technique.
- Footwork drills, all about agility.
- No grappling or ground fighting whatsoever.
MMA: The Whole Shebang
Then, I watched some MMA, and I was immediately confused. These guys weren’t just standing and striking; they were wrestling, tackling, and doing all sorts of crazy stuff on the ground! I decided to try a beginner MMA class to see what was up.

This class was totally different. We still did some striking, but it was less refined than the kickboxing class. It felt more… raw, I guess? Then, we moved on to takedowns. We learned how to shoot for the legs, how to clinch, and how to control someone against the cage (which is basically a big fence). The hardest part was the ground game. We practiced submissions like arm bars and chokes. It was exhausting, and I spent most of the time getting tangled up like a pretzel.
- Striking, but less emphasis on pure technique.
- Takedowns: learning to wrestle and control opponents.
- Ground fighting: grappling, submissions, and all that jazz.
- It’s basically a mix of everything!
My Takeaway
From what i have experienced, Kickboxing is a great way to learn striking and get a killer cardio workout. It’s more specialized, focusing on stand-up fighting techniques. MMA, on the other hand, is a much broader sport. It includes striking, but also wrestling, grappling, and submissions.
So, if you want to be a well-rounded fighter, MMA is probably the way to go, but if you want to improve striking and cardo kickboxing is the one. That’s all from what I have experienced
