Okay, so the other day, I was watching a football match, and it got me thinking, “How wide is that goalpost anyway?” I mean, we see it all the time, but do we really know the exact size? I decided to find out, once and for all.
My Little Experiment
First, I did some digging online. I figured there had to be some official standard, right? And yep, there it is. Turns out, the big guys at the International Football Association Board (IFAB) have a rule for this.
I grabbed my measuring tape (you know, the one I usually use for DIY stuff around the house) and headed outside. I don’t have a real football goal in my backyard, of course, but I figured I could at least mark out the space to get a feel for it.
- Step 1: I found a flat stretch of wall in my backyard.
- Step 2: I know that a standard goalpost must be 24 feet wide and 8 feet tall, so, I measured out 24 feet along the wall, using my trusty tape measure. I put a piece of tape at each end to mark the “posts.”
Standing back and looking at those two pieces of tape, 24 feet apart, I was like, “Wow, that’s actually pretty wide!” It’s much bigger than it seems when you’re watching it on TV.
I didn’t stop there, so I measured 8 feet to know how tall the goalpost. 24 feet wide and 8 feet tall, that’s big one goal!
So, there you have it. My little hands-on experiment to visualize the width of a football goalpost. It’s 24 feet wide and 8 feet tall – way bigger than you might think!
