Okay, so the other day, I was watching a particularly brutal NFL game. I mean, one team was just getting absolutely crushed. It got me thinking, “Is there like, a mercy rule in the NFL? Like in little league when they call the game if one team is up by too much?”
So, I grabbed my phone and started googling. I typed in “does the NFL have a mercy rule?” and hit enter.
My Search Results
- First thing I saw were some forum discussions. Lots of people arguing about it, actually. Some folks thought it would be a good idea, others were totally against it.
- Then I found some articles from sports websites. Seemingly all said pretty much the same information.
And you know what? All were saying No, there’s no official mercy rule in the NFL. Apparently, it’s all about “professionalism” and “playing until the final whistle,” that kind of stuff. I guess that makes sense, these are the pros, after all.
Even though there’s no official rule, I noticed some games do kinda have an unofficial mercy rule. Like, the winning team might start putting in their backup players, or running the ball more to kill the clock. Just kinda take their foot off the gas, you know?
So, that’s what I found out. No mercy rule in the NFL, officially. But sometimes, teams show a little mercy on their own. I guess it’s all part of the game!
