Okay, so the other day I got into this random discussion with my buddy about football. Not soccer, but American football, you know? We were watching a game, and I just blurted out, “Hey, how much do you think a football actually weighs?”
My friend, he just shrugged and guessed, “I don’t know, like a pound or something?” That got me thinking, is it really just a pound? So, naturally, I decided to go down a rabbit hole and find out.
Digging into the Weight
First, I hopped online and started poking around. Turns out, there’s actual rules about this stuff. Who knew, right?

- I learned that way back when, the weight used to be a bit lighter, like 13-15 ounces.
- But since 1937, they set the standard to 14-16 ounces.
- And for the NFL, those guys are strict—it’s usually between 14 and 15 ounces.
So, my buddy wasn’t too far off with his guess. But 14 ounces is nearly a pound, and an ounce is still a big deal. I thought it’s time to put this to the test!
Putting It to the Test
I grabbed one of my old footballs from the garage, the one we used to toss around all the time. It’s a bit worn out, but still in decent shape.
Then I used a kitchen scale to see what it really weighed. Placed the football on the scale, and waited for the numbers to settle.
And guess what? It came out to 14.5 ounces. Right in that sweet spot! I felt like a real scientist or something, haha. I guess that makes sense. It’s not too heavy to throw around, but it’s got enough weight to it that you can actually get some distance.
Wrapping It Up
So, yeah, that’s my little adventure into the world of football weights. It’s funny how these random questions can lead you to learn something new. Now, I can impress (or maybe just bore) my friends with my newfound football knowledge!
Anyway, it was a fun little experiment. Maybe next time I’ll try to figure out how much air pressure they put in those things. That’s another mystery for another day!
