So, I’ve been getting into boxing lately, and let me tell you, it’s a whole different world. One of the first things I realized was that I needed to get the right gear. And not just any gear, but the right size gear. I mean, you wouldn’t wear shoes that are three sizes too big, right? Same goes for boxing gloves.
My first step was figuring out what kind of gloves I even needed. Turns out, there are different types! I mainly plan on hitting the heavy bag at the gym, so I focused on what they call “bag gloves.” Makes sense, right? Bag gloves for the bag.
Then came the tricky part – sizing. I found out that gloves that are too tight can mess with your blood flow and just be plain uncomfortable. Nobody wants that. And gloves that are too loose? Forget about it. You need a good, snug fit for proper punching.

I did some digging and found out there’s a whole range of sizes. You’ve got small, medium, large, and even extra-large. They go by inches, based on the size of your hand.
- Small: Around 6 to 7.5 inches.
- Medium: 7.5 to 8.5 inches.
- Large: 8.5 to 9.5 inches.
- Extra-Large: 9.5 inches and up.
To get my size, I had to measure my hand. I grabbed a measuring tape – you know, the soft kind, not the metal ones for construction – and wrapped it around the widest part of my knuckles, not including my thumb. I wrote down that number, which was in inches.
Then, I started looking at sizing charts from different boxing glove brands. Each brand seems to have their own little variations, so it’s good to check their specific charts.
Here’s another thing I learned: your weight and height can also play a role. It seems like taller folks or those over 140 pounds but less than 190 pounds usually do better with 12-ounce gloves. And if you’re heavier or pack a real punch, 14-ounce gloves might be the way to go, especially for bag work.
Anyway, after all that measuring and researching, I finally settled on a pair of gloves that fit me just right. I tested out my new gloves on the bag, and let me tell you, it made a world of difference! The right fit made my punches feel more powerful and controlled. Plus, my hands weren’t killing me afterward. It was a bit of a process, but definitely worth it to find the perfect fit!
