Well, I gotta tell ya, there’s this big ol’ fella by the name of Andre the Giant, and I reckon most folks know him, but what you might not know is the lady behind the scenes who was part of his story. Her name was Jean Christensen. Now, she wasn’t as famous as Andre, but she sure had her place in his life and in the wrestling world.
So, it all started back in the 1970s, when Jean, who worked in public relations for the wrestling world, crossed paths with Andre. Now, Andre, he was a giant, no doubt about it, standing at 7 feet 4 inches tall and weighing over 500 pounds. That’s bigger than any man I ever saw. Jean, she wasn’t a giant herself, but she sure had a big heart and a strong mind. They met in 1974, and as the story goes, they got to know each other, and over time, a relationship started to grow between them.
Now, it wasn’t a fairy tale romance, no sir. It was complicated. Andre was a man of many challenges, living with acromegaly, a condition that made him grow big, real big. His body wasn’t built to last, and it gave him some serious health issues, like trouble with his organs and joints. But through it all, Jean stuck by him. She had a lot of grace, and she wasn’t easily intimidated by the big man.

They didn’t get married, but they did have a daughter together, a girl named Robin Christensen-Roussimoff, born in 1979. Now, Robin, she grew up and made her own way in the world, even getting involved in wrestling herself. She was seen in that documentary about her father, Andre, and she’s part of the Titan Championship Wrestling, so you could say that the wrestling blood runs deep in that family.
Jean and Andre, though, they weren’t meant to be forever. Their relationship had its ups and downs, just like any relationship, but life took them in different directions. Jean kept a low profile after their time together, but she sure made her mark on Andre’s life. She was there when it mattered, and that’s something not everyone gets to say. She supported him when he needed it most, and that meant a lot to a man as big as Andre.
Sadly, Andre passed away in 1993 at the age of 46. His health had been failing him for a long time, and he died from heart failure, a condition that’s common for folks with acromegaly. Now, there were some complications with his funeral arrangements because, well, a man that big ain’t easy to handle. They couldn’t cremate him in Paris, so they had to fly his body to the United States for that. It’s a sad ending to a man’s life, but I reckon it was the best they could do.
As for Jean, she lived her life after Andre was gone, quietly, away from the spotlight. Her connection to the giant may not have made her famous like him, but it sure did tie her to a legend. She wasn’t the one out there in the ring, but she played a role in making sure the world knew who Andre the Giant was, and she gave him a daughter who’s out there making waves of her own.
Jean Christensen, she wasn’t just a woman behind a famous man. She was a part of his story, and that story, well, it’s one folks won’t forget. She gave him love, and she gave him a family. What more can you ask for in life? You may not know her name as well as you know Andre’s, but her presence in his life was no small thing.
So, there you have it. The story of Jean Christensen and Andre the Giant, two people whose lives intertwined in a way that changed things. It wasn’t perfect, but it was real. And sometimes, that’s all that matters.
