Well now, if we’re talkin’ about Irish footballers in the Premier League, it’s like tellin’ stories about the good ol’ days, when the lads kicked up a storm on them fancy pitches. Now, I’m not sayin’ they’re all the biggest stars, but they sure make their mark, you can be sure of that! From young fellas like Evan Ferguson, who’s showin’ plenty of promise, to the seasoned pros like Roy Keane, Ireland’s got a fair share of footballers strutin’ their stuff in the English top flight.
Roy Keane, sure he was the heart and soul of Manchester United for years. Folks from Cork know him well, and if ya talk about his time there, well, he’s the stuff of legends. Played over 360 games, scored nearly 40 goals, and helped bring home seven Premier League titles. The man was a rock in midfield, bossin’ the game like nobody’s business. And don’t forget, he was the captain too, a proper leader! His no-nonsense style made him a feared and respected figure all across the league.
But of course, Roy ain’t the only Irish fella who made it big. If ya look back, you got Denis Irwin, another one who left his mark with Manchester United, and Damien Duff, who gave Chelsea and Fulham a fair bit of excitement on the left wing. The likes of Robbie Keane, with his skillful feet and clever movement, was also one to watch. These lads didn’t just play for the fun of it; they played to win, and win they did.

Now, not all the Irish boys from back then are still in the mix, but we’ve got a few new faces comin’ through. Take Evan Ferguson for example. This young fella’s got a future ahead of him. He’s already turnin’ heads at Brighton, showing off his goal-scoring skills. And he ain’t the only one. There’s Matt Doherty, who’s been around a while, playin’ for teams like Wolves and Spurs, and now he’s at Atletico Madrid, but his time in the Premier League certainly made an impact. Then there’s Chiedozie Ogbene, a speedster who’s been takin’ his chances at Rotherham and could be one to watch in the big leagues soon enough.
Dara O’Shea is another one that’s makin’ his name known. He’s a tough defender playin’ for Burnley, and he managed to clock up nearly 3,000 minutes last season, a real workhorse. You also got Josh Cullen, who’s been makin’ a steady impression with Burnley too. It’s good to see the Irish boys out there, playin’ tough and representin’ their country like that.
It’s funny though, because not all the Irish lads get the same airtime. Take last season, for instance. Only 14 Irish players made appearances across the 2021/22 season, and the numbers were so low that not even 10 of ‘em hit double digits. But hey, they all get a shot, and even if it’s just for a couple of matches, they do their bit.
Even if we don’t have the big stars like Roy Keane now, there’s still a lot to be proud of. We’ve got young fellas comin’ through, and some older heads still keepin’ the flag flyin’. Whether it’s in the midfield, defence, or up front, the Irish lads have always had a presence in the Premier League. Every now and then, you hear a name you haven’t heard in a while, and you remember, oh yeah, they’re Irish too!
Irish Players to Watch
- Roy Keane – The legend of legends, a midfield dynamo.
- Denis Irwin – A steady hand in defence, a Premier League winner.
- Damien Duff – A winger who could light up any game.
- Matt Doherty – Always giving it his all, no matter where he plays.
- Chiedozie Ogbene – A young lad with pace and skill to burn.
- Evan Ferguson – Keep an eye on this lad, he’s gonna do big things.
- Dara O’Shea – A defender who’s tough as nails.
- Josh Cullen – Another Burnley lad making his mark.
Now, it’s true that the number of Irish players in the Premier League ain’t what it used to be, but that don’t mean there ain’t talent out there. You never know when the next big name might come along, whether they’re from Cork, Dublin, or anywhere else. The Irish boys will always find their way, and when they do, they’ll be givin’ it their all, just like they always have.
