Okay, so the other day, I was watching a football game with a buddy, and he kept mentioning this “LS” position. I’d heard the term before, but honestly, I had no clue what it really meant. So, I decided to do a little digging myself.
First, I grabbed my phone and just typed “LS in football” into the search bar. The top result, right there, boom – “Long Snapper.” That cleared the abbreviation, but… what the heck does a long snapper do?
So my process began, I started reading a bunch of articles. It turns out, it’s a pretty important, though maybe not super glamorous, job on the field.

What is a Long Snapper
My Simple Explanation:
- I checked a couple of sports websites.
- I found out that a long snapper is a special player, mostly on special teams.
- I discovered, they’re the guys who hike the ball way back for punts and field goals.
- It is a bit different, the regular center just snaps it a short distance to the quarterback,I noticed.
- I realized, the long snapper has to make a perfect, long snap, usually 7-8 yards for field goals and even farther for punts.
- I confirmed, It’s all about accuracy and speed!
I watched some videos. It’s surprisingly tricky! I always thought you just bend over and toss the ball back, but these guys are super precise. They have to get the ball to the holder or punter super fast and in the exact right spot, otherwise, the kick could get blocked or go way off.
So I learned, the “LS,” or Long Snapper, is kind of a hidden hero. They don’t get a lot of attention, but if they mess up, everyone notices! Next time I watch a game, I’ll definitely be paying more attention to that guy.
