Man, I recently dove headfirst into the whole mess of performance-enhancing drugs, or PEDs, in boxing. It’s like, I’ve always been a huge boxing fan, following all the big fights and fighters, but I never really stopped to think about this dark side of the sport.
So, I started digging around, just reading whatever I could find online about it. Articles, news reports, forum discussions, you name it. At first, it was just out of curiosity. But the more I read, the more I realized how big of a problem this is in boxing.
What I found out?
Basically, these PEDs are substances that some boxers use to get an unfair advantage. Stuff like making them stronger, faster, or able to train harder and recover quicker. I read about some boxer who was caught using a drug called Ostarine before and on the day of the fight. And it’s not just about being stronger. Some of these drugs can mess with your balance, coordination, and endurance, which are super important in boxing. I mean, the whole point of the sport is to be a better athlete, not to find the best chemist, right?

- I started looking into the different types of PEDs.
- Found out about anabolic steroids, human growth hormone, and a bunch of other stuff I’d never even heard of.
- Learned that these drugs can have some serious side effects.
- Checked out what organizations like the IBA are doing to try to catch athletes who are using.
I mean, they’re testing athletes all the time, in and out of competition, without any warning, to collect urine or blood samples. The aim is to detect and deter doping among athletes to protect the clean ones.
It’s a real mess, and it feels like nobody really wants to take responsibility for cleaning it up. Like, it’s almost become normal to hear about a fighter getting busted for PEDs. And every time it happens, it kinda ruins the sport a little bit more for me. It makes you question every amazing performance you see, wondering if it was real or if it was the drugs.
It’s messed up, man. It really makes you think twice about the sport and the fighters you admire.
So yeah, that’s what I’ve been up to. Trying to make sense of this whole PED thing in boxing. It’s been a real eye-opener, and not in a good way.
It’s a problem that’s been around for a while, and it doesn’t seem like it’s going away anytime soon. As a fan, it’s just super disappointing. But I guess all we can do is keep talking about it and hope that things change for the better.
