Alright, so ya wanna know how many Mexican fellas play in that football league, the NFL, right? Well, it ain’t easy to say 딱 a number, ya know? It’s like countin’ chickens, they keep movin’ around.
I heard some folks sayin’ there ain’t many, only like 2% of all them players a few years back. Two percent! That ain’t a whole lot, is it? Imagine a whole pie, and you only get a tiny sliver. That’s kinda how it is with them Mexican players, seems like.
But then, I hear other things too. Someone was jabberin’ on about more than 40 fellas with Latino roots playin’ this year. Forty! That’s a whole bunch more than that 2%, ain’t it? Makes ya head spin, all these different numbers flyin’ around.

So, why all the confusion? Well, I reckon it’s hard to keep track. Some of them boys, maybe their grandpappy came from Mexico, but they were born here. Are they Mexican? Are they American? Who knows! It’s like tryin’ to figure out if a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable. Makes ya wanna throw up your hands and say, “Whatever!”
And then there’s this thing about “identifying” as Latino. What does that even mean? Sounds like a bunch of fancy talk to me. If you look Mexican, and your mama makes tamales, then you’re Mexican, right? That’s how it works in my book, anyways.
- Now, they got some names I heard, like Mark Sanchez. He played quarterback, a real important job, ya know? He’s Mexican, they say.
- And that Tom Fears fella, he was the first Mexican-born to play in the NFL. Imagine that! Bustin’ down doors for all them other fellas. Good for him, I say.
I also heard about a fella named Raul Allegre, won himself a Super Bowl ring. That’s somethin’ to be proud of, winnin’ the big game. And there’s this young fella, Isaac Alarcón, tryin’ to make a name for himself. Good luck to him, I say.
But still, it ain’t enough, ya know? They say there’s a whole lot of Latino folks in this country, but not that many in the NFL. Only like half a percent, someone said. That don’t seem right, does it? Seems like there should be more, considerin’ how many Latinos there are.
It’s like plantin’ a whole field of corn, but only a few stalks grow. What happened to the rest? Maybe they need more sunshine, or more water. Maybe them football teams need to look a little harder, find them good Mexican players hidin’ in the tall grass.
I tell ya, it’s a shame. Them Mexican boys, they’re strong, they’re fast, they got heart. They could be real good at football, if they just got the chance. It’s like my grandma used to say, “You gotta give ‘em a shot, or you’ll never know what they can do.” And she was a smart woman, my grandma.

So, to answer your question, how many Mexican players in the NFL? Well, it depends on who you ask, and how you count. But one thing’s for sure, there ain’t enough. Not yet, anyways. But maybe someday, things will change. Maybe someday, we’ll see a whole bunch of Mexican fellas playin’ in the Super Bowl. That would be somethin’, wouldn’t it?
Anyways, that’s what I make of it. It ain’t easy to figure out, this whole football thing. But I tried my best to explain it to ya, the way I see it. Hope it makes some sense.
