Alright, so you got them boxing gloves, huh? Sweaty, stinkin’ after beatin’ the heck outta that bag, or maybe even some fella. You’re wonderin’, can you just chuck ’em in the washin’ machine? Well, hold your horses, young’un. It ain’t that simple.
Now, I ain’t no fancy boxing expert, but I know a thing or two about washin’ stuff. And them washin’ machines, they’re rough. They spin and tumble and get things all hot and bothered. That ain’t good for them gloves, no sirree.
See, them gloves, they got all that paddin’ inside. Keeps your hands from gettin’ all busted up. And that paddin’, it don’t like gettin’ soaked and spun around. It’ll get all bunched up and lumpy, like a wet chicken feather pillow. Then your gloves ain’t worth a lick.

And the outside, that leather, or whatever it’s made of? It’ll get beat up too. All scratched and cracked. You spend good money on them gloves, you don’t want ’em lookin’ like somethin’ the cat dragged in.
So, what do you do? Well, you gotta be gentle, like you’re washin’ a baby’s behind. First off, you wipe ’em down. Get a rag, get it damp, not drippin’ wet, mind you. And wipe off all that sweat and grime. Inside and out. Get in all them nooks and crannies.
Then, if they’re real stinky, you gotta do a little more. Get yourself some of that gentle soap. The kind you use on your dishes, maybe. Or that baby soap, that works too. Put a little on that damp rag, and wipe ’em down again. Don’t go dunkin’ them in water, though. Just wipe ’em down good.
- Wipe inside and out: Get all that sweat and stink out.
- Use gentle soap: Don’t use nothin’ too strong, it’ll ruin them gloves.
- Don’t soak ’em: Water is the enemy, remember that.
Now, here’s the important part. You gotta let them dry. And I mean really dry. Don’t just toss ’em in your bag and forget about ’em. They’ll get all moldy and nasty. Hang ’em up somewhere, let the air get to ’em. Maybe stick some newspaper inside, that’ll soak up some of the dampness.
And don’t go puttin’ ’em in the sun, neither. That’ll dry ’em out too fast, make that leather all cracked and brittle. Just let ’em dry slow and easy, like a good ham hangin’ in the smokehouse.
You take care of them gloves, they’ll take care of you. You go punchin’ with busted up, stinkin’ gloves, folks will think you’re some kinda hobo. You wanna be a champ, you gotta look like a champ. And that means clean gloves, see?

So, to recap, washin’ machine? No way, Jose. Gentle wipe down, gentle soap, and let ’em dry good. That’s the ticket. Now go on, get to cleanin’. And maybe take a shower yourself while you’re at it. You smell worse than them gloves!
And if you got them fancy MMA gloves, it’s the same deal. All that mesh and stuff, it’s even more delicate. So be extra careful, you hear? You don’t want to be going into the ring with gloves that look like they’ve been through a meat grinder.
Now, I’ve heard some folks talkin’ about special glove sprays and deodorizers. I ain’t never used ’em myself, but if you wanna try ’em, go ahead. Just make sure they’re made for boxing gloves. You don’t wanna spray somethin’ on there that’ll eat away at the leather or the padding. That would just be plain foolish now wouldn’t it?
And one last thing, if you’re using those gloves a lot, you know, trainin’ every day or whatever, you gotta clean ‘em more often. Don’t let that sweat and grime build up. It’s bad for the gloves and it’s bad for your hands. A little bit of cleanin’ goes a long way, you see. Just like cleanin’ a chicken before you cook it, same principle.
